Remarkable Woman Nomination – Women to Watch
Nominee: Denise Castle, Minden
Denise Castle, a Minden resident, is the executive director for JOIN Inc., a workforce innovation and development organization serving all 13 Northern Nevada counties, including Douglas County. JOIN provides access to career exploration and training, as well as necessary tools and supplies to qualified candidates at no cost. Additionally, JOIN Inc. provides up to 100% wage reimbursement for up to 12-weeks to employers, and work experience for young adults.
Denise lives by the mantra of breaking the cycle of poverty in Northern Nevada so that people are provided the support they need to either re-enter the workforce after homemaking or raising children, helping displaced or laid-off workers move up to the next level or retrain for a new career, transition from the military to the civilian workforce, find a career for young people for whom college is not the answer and level up for increased ability to earn not only a living wage, but a sustaining wage on which to thrive.
Denise has partnered with regional organizations, including Eddy House, a resource for homeless teens, to provide solutions for young people who find themselves without a regular bed to sleep in, such as resume support, telephone support for those all-important phone calls from prospective employers, clothing, transportation, education and training.
In the new Nevada economy, skilled, trained workers are in critical demand. Through Denise’s out-of-the-box way of thinking, JOIN Inc. has offered inventive solutions to job seekers and employers alike, supporting in demand occupations including construction, manufacturing, mining, hospitality, entertainment and gaming, and everything in between. She works closely with educators, trade organizations, employers and government entities to provide real solutions to Nevada’s employers and growing diversity in industry.
Through her efforts, thousands of Northern Nevadans have moved out of poverty, and into meaningful, lucrative careers that, in turn, provide four times the benefit back to the community in terms of support of local businesses and money returning to the local economy.
Prior to JOIN Inc., Denise served as a Case Manager II for Douglas County Social Services Division for more than five years where she was instrumental in building Douglas County’s workforce development programs, developing strategies, tools, curriculum and opportunities for Douglas County residents. She also worked as a family resource specialist for the Family Support Council of Douglas County, and as the operations director for the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center.
Denise has also served as a member of the board for the Suicide Prevention Network of Douglas County for the past 10 years, serving as board president for six of those years. She actively participates in fundraising and other support functions for the organization.
It is through these experiences Denise has honed her ability to serve the underserved, elevate the underemployed and give hope to the lonely, scared and hopeless among us by providing access to life skills, training and education to enable them to lift themselves out of poverty and homelessness.
